The theme of this year’s Hospice Care Week (7-13 October) is All About Retail. We’re putting the spotlight on Jean Davey, 80, who has been volunteering in Saint Francis Hospice’s shops for over 26 years. She is incredibly humble about the dedication and commitment she gives to help people who need our compassionate palliative and end-of-life care services.

Here Jean shares why volunteering is such an important part of her life.

Volunteering gives me a real sense of purpose and I get back so much more than I give.

I’ve been volunteering two days a week at the Brentwood Superstore since it opened in 2021 and before then I helped at the two shops that used to be along the High Street for over 20 years.

On Mondays, my main task is cleaning the shop. I take great pride in making sure the shop is clean, and I know our customers appreciate it as they tell me. On Fridays, I’m usually on the till and happy to help on other days if needed.

The best part about volunteering has been the social side. I’ve made so many friends from my time at the shops and we often go out together.

Our charity shops are such an important part of our community. You really get to know customers. I know some customers are lonely and do not have anyone to talk to, so it’s lovely that I can take time to talk to people.

Saint Francis Hospice touches so many people’s life but a lot of people don’t know about the care and support it provides to local people

I have also volunteered with the occupational therapy team. It is such a lovely place, and I really enjoyed talking with people who were being supported by the hospice.

The hospice cared for my husband before he died 22 years ago. He was only on the ward for a short time, but it made such a difference.

The care he received was amazing and it was lovely that he could look out onto the beautiful gardens.

Many volunteers have been here a long time so that shows how much we enjoy it.

If anyone is thinking of volunteering, come along and try it! You do not need experience, and you will have a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends.
