Retired firefighter Mathew Bull won £3,000 on the Saint Francis Hospice lottery. Here he shares why he has been supporting the hospice for the past 27 years.

I’ve been supporting Saint Francis Hospice since 1998. I organised fundraising events with my best friend who was cared for on the ward before he died in 2000.

I signed up to play the lottery when I was at the Havering Town Show one year as it was another opportunity to support the hospice while having a chance to win something back.

Over the years I have won a few £5s, but this was the first time I’d won such a big prize! I thought it was a joke but after having a chat with the fundraising team, I knew it was real. It was just phenomenal.

My wife Julie is a nurse with the Hospice at Home team and she also won £20 in the same draw.

I was presented with my cheque on the day Julie and I came to the hospice to volunteer for the Christmas tree recycling campaign. I’ve done this for many years, and it is always great fun.
