Today we hear from Jan Scott on the hospice's ever present commitment to upskilling the Saint Francis Hospice team and staying ahead of the evolving palliative healthcare challenges.

Another great achievement for Saint Francis Hospice. In January, twelve members of staff became Dementia Interpreters. Training2Care, expert trainers in this field, came and delivered the workshop and everyone taking part passed as level one interpreters, further levels will be available to us.

Most exciting is that two members of staff (Charlotte and Klaire) will go on to qualify as trainers for this course, which will allow many other SFH people to take the training and qualify as interpreters too. One of the most vital aspects of supporting people with dementia is being able to recognise and understand the changes in communication that will inevitably happen while on their personal journey of dementia.

The dementia interpreter course showed the impact of communication and the need for staff to start to understand and translate the language of dementia, and enabled the delegates to communicate more effectively with those who we care for. Part of the course is experiential training, using special equipment, which demonstrated how gradually, people with dementia, will have a decrease in the ability to communicate effectively.
