Tribute to Chair of Trustees Peter Crutchett
We pay tribute to our devoted Chairman of Trustees, Peter Crutchett, who died suddenly last week
Peter, who enjoyed a successful career as an Actuary, became a Trustee in January 2005.
He served as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2018 and was appointed as Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2018.
“It’s never easy to say a final farewell to the people you care about,” said Grazina Berry, Chief Executive Officer at Saint Francis Hospice.
“While I only knew Peter and worked with him for a few months, his death has been difficult news for everyone at the Hospice and to me.
“Supporting our charity for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles - as Trustee, then Vice-Chair, and for the last 5 years as Chair, meant that Peter knew everyone and everyone respected and valued his advice, he had a graceful manner, a cheeky laugh and unwavering commitment and passion for our work.
“We will miss, Peter, but we will never forget what he has helped us achieve.
“Peter will always remain in the fabric of the Hospice and in our people’s hearts. May he rest in peace."
Commitment to delivering services
Peter was committed to using his skills and experience to ensure Saint Francis Hospice delivered the very best palliative and end-of-life care and support to local people.
Peter always had time to talk to staff, volunteers and anyone else he bumped into on site
He was also well-known and respected by staff and volunteers across the organisation for his affable nature.
He was proud to present staff and volunteers with Long Service Awards. And whilst a volunteer himself, Peter attended the annual ‘thank you’ events to recognise and celebrate volunteers who give the gift of their time.
He also attended our annual Light Up a Life remembrance services.
Why Peter became a trustee
Last year, Peter was featured in a video in which he spoke about why he became a trustee at the hospice.
Peter said, “The thing I enjoy most is being part of a committed team who work well together to provide the care our patients need.
“It is really gratifying when people in the community come up to me and say how wonderful the care members of their family or their friends received at Saint Francis Hospice was.
“I have learned an awful lot in my time here. I have learned how we deliver the services to our patients and their families. I have seen for myself the dedication and commitment of the staff and the volunteers to achieving the best possible standards.
“A lot goes on behind the scenes that people don’t see to ensure that those standards are maintained so the care remains outstanding."
Trustee and Vice Chairman Paul Gwinn has stepped into the role of Acting Chairman for the hospice.
The funeral will take place on Monday 12th February at 10.30 am at Bentley Crematorium followed by a service of celebration at Hutton and Shenfield Union Church, Roundwood Avenue, Hutton Mount, CM13. The reception will be held at Thorndon Park Golf Club. No black, bright colours only. All donations to Saint Francis Hospice.
